The countdown to the opening week of football has begun.

Northwest Missouri State football returns to the gridiron with some new leaders, but the same expectations.

Andy Hessler is one of those veterans expected to lead the underclassmen through a tough MIAA schedule. Hessler, a junior linebacker, is one of six captains for the Bearcats. He gets the nod despite missing the final 11 games in 2018 after a season-ending injury.

The Hartland, Wisconsin native was excited to receive the distinction, but said it will take everyone doing their one-eleventh if they want to reach their goals.

"It's an honor to be voted captain by my teammates, but just like we always preach, everyone is a leader on this team. If we want to get to where we want to go, the six of us who have been chosen as captains can't pull everyone. Everyone has to be pulling the rope in the right direction if we want to go win the national championship like we say we do."

Other team captains along with Hessler include Marqus Andrews, Tanner Owen, Ryan Spellhaug, Jake Gassman and Spencer Phillips.
